The Towpath Inn
49 Main Rd, Gilwern, AbergavennyIf you love putting pictures of your pizza on Instagram then this is the place for you. I’d challenge anyone to eat more than 3 slices of the Detroit style pizza! It’s a dense dough and a lot of sauce.

The Gaff abergavenny
Unit 4 The Courtyard, Lion St, AbergavennyWe were well looked after by someone who I'm assured in reviews is known as the rude man in the check shirt, but if memory serves as well as he did his name was Andrew and he was helpful and funny and welcoming. The food was fab. Partridge and celeriac and marsala carrots and all manner of delicious nonsense that arrived when it was ready like wagamama tapas. We tried the locally made house wine with no small amount of scepticism but then bought a bottle cos it was really good. The vibe of the place was lovely, smart but relaxed. Absolutely recommend this little place.
Vegetarian options: My girlfriend is vegetarian, so we ordered one meat dish for me and loads of vegetables dishes. Not sure if they were sides or sharing plates, but we sort of went at them like tapas. When my partridge turned up, there was also a crispy cabbage dish. She only said how good it was after it was gone (fair play, I had my meat, I'm not butt hurt) but you know the food is good when their head is down, they're quiet and you don't get offered any but they scrape all the sauce off the plate with the fork. ?

Bayleaf
7 Market St, AbergavennyJust wanted to say went with my family and friends and the young man with the beard was such a lovely lad. (forgot to ask for his name) The food was amazing i have no words to describe it and best restaurant I’ve ever been to. Would definitely recommend. the people and staff are so lovely and friendly. customer service exquisite and the overall design of the restaurant really caught my eye.
Vegetarian options: Every standard curry has its own vegetarian option. This was beautiful to see as my Wife is a vegetarian and can never find a restaurant that accommodates her vegetarian needs.
Parking: There is plenty of parking. I asked a member of staff for anywhere i could park and was directed to a parking facility nearby which was indeed very helpful.

The Oak Room
The Angel Hotel, 15 Cross St, AbergavennyFirstly what lovely staff they're a credit to the hotel. My Mum is 86 & finds sometimes she's too low at the table. Before we said anything the man (restaurant manager/head waiter)asked if she would like a cushion so that was very kind. We both had the pork which was lovely, very tasty. I was a little disappointed in the flavour of the small trio of desserts, so I was glad I didn't have a normal portion of any of them. Very unusual for me to not finish a dessert but the mandarin & pistachio Eaton mess tasted like soap to me & my Mum tasted it & thought it wasn't nice too. Choc & cherry very rich & I love Frangipane tart but it was too rich with mincemeat so dessert was a let down but everything else was superb. I would recommend to others.

The Crown at Pantygelli
Old Hereford Rd, Pantygelli, AbergavennyStopped by for lunch. Nice, dog friendly pub. Good food - I am often disappointed by arancini in the UK but here they were great. Very nice squid ink pasta special. The steak and ale was good, especially if you like it to be strong on the "ale" side, although the vegetables it was supposed to be served with were quite a bit late. But otherwise the service was good.

Abergavenny Brewers Fayre
Westgate House, Llanfoist, AbergavennyFood was good, no surprises and did the job to fuel us on a long journey. The atmosphere was ok, these places are a bit soulless and even though it looks like a pub, it’s not, it is just a reliable and cheap meal out.
Staff were ok, although the girl taking my order at the bar was a little inpatient, not rude but not friendly.
Overall a good place to stop on a road trip but I wouldn’t go out of my way to go back.
Parking: Make sure you register your car inside the restaurant.

The Art Shop & Chapel
Market St, AbergavennyI’m a massive foodie and I’ve eaten some great food over the last year. The meal I had yesterday at Chapel Arts kitchen was not only the best meal I’ve had this year, but in the top 5 I’ve ever had.
I had the Daal with chicory, a garlic bread and gooseberry chutney. But it was so much more than that. The daal was incredible, with a deep, rich flavour rounding off with hints of star anise. Topped with the unusual but inspired choice of gooseberry chutney, it had all the sweet, tart and acidic flavour to perfectly round off some brilliant spice cookery. I could eat it by the bucketful!
And the bread. What might you expect besides a hint of garlic and bit of char? I want to know what they did to this bread to transform it into the perfect accompaniment to this daal and a spectacular side by itself. It had the most gentle garlicky char and an amazing, warm, deep flavour I don’t know how to describe, but which was homely and comforting and when dipped in the daal and chutney was absolute perfection.
My partner had a beautiful salad of green beans, quinoa and grilled peaches. Light, delicate and very summery!
From the view into the kitchen, it looked like everything was run very efficiently. A great selection of beautiful looking produce, and a selection of deserts that will deserve another visit by themselves. The serving team were also brilliant. Water for the table without even asking, and were very friendly and attentive.
I’ve had meals recommended by the Michelin man that didn’t hold a flame to how absolutely wonderful this food was. It was food that made me very happy and left me smiling for the rest of the day.
Thank you for feeding me. I will absolutely be back!

The Grofield Inn
Baker St, AbergavennyHaving recently moved to the area, my partner and I have made the Grofield Inn our local, despite it not being the closest pub to our house. We love the atmosphere and the food and drink. But most of all, we love the staff and their service - we are always made to feel welcome, and the staff are genuinely disappointed when we don't take our dog, Juniper, to the pub. Today, we had our first Sunday roast at the Grofield - 10/10.
