Turkish Kitchen Meze and grill
ground floor, 66 Saddler St, DurhamI hope they get some decent bottled cider in, that's the only thing that lets this place down. Fruit flavoured fizz isn't real cider. A basic, medium Sheppy's would be very welcome. (But if unavailable from supplier an Aspals would do too). Excellent sharing mezze board for 2/3 and ambience/decor is in good taste.

21 Silver St, DurhamThe portions here were huge, I’d definitely recommend the sharing starter as it had lots of choice on it. The bbq grill kebab was also very tasty. Only criticism was that it was very slow service when it came to asking for the bill - catching a waiters attention was almost impossible for 20 minutes.

84 Claypath, DurhamHad a great experience at Tia’s. Excellent communication beforehand showing great knowledge of allergens and cross-contamination. Lovely welcome on arrival, extensive standard and Gluten-Free menu. There was a really positive feel to Tia’s and a lovely relaxed atmosphere. \n\nFood was delicious, Tostadas, Wings, Quesadillas to start all went down well. Top tip. Only order wings if you’re hungry! Mains also great. Burrito, Shredded Beef with Rice and Chicken Kebabs all were superb and again, healthy portion sizes. \n\nCan’t fault anything at all. The Library
46 Saddler St, DurhamWe had a great meal here on Tuesday this week.
We sat outside and a lovely waitress came and cheerfully helped us put some tables together. She was really friendly and explained the menu option to us perfectly. She was very attentive, extremely knowledgeable and really made us feel welcome.
We didn't wait long for the food either, which was fabulous. Great portions, nice and hot and really tasty.
My husband was also really impressed with the selection of drinks on tap too.
So an absolute winner all round.

The Cellar Door
41 Saddler St, DurhamAfter a day walking around Durham this lovely restaurant was recommended as a place to eat a good roast. That was not wrong! They very kindly fitted us in and got us a lovely table at the window overlooking one of the stone bridges and the river. You can, on a Sunday, have a three course dinner for £30 but we're seen the size of the roast and just went straight for that. Really lovely, friendly and smiley service only enhanced the experience. My friend had beef, I had lamb. Both was tender and plentiful - the homemade mint sauce (mint from their garden!) was absolutely delicious. A yorkshire pudding as big as a baby's head, cauliflower cheese, crisps roasties....it was a legendary roast. Difficult to access for those with physical impairments as the restaurant is done a very steep set of stairs. Saying that someone had managed to get their pram down the stairs!

Bistro Italiano
70 Claypath, DurhamWhat a brilliant find. We were in Durham for the evening and looking for an Italian restaurant. We found Bistro Italian online and the reviews looked good... They weren't wrong!\n\nFrom the outside it doesn't look much, but looks can be deceptive. The inside is cosy, intimate and delightful. Linen tablecloths and napkins and small rooms. The service is fabulous. Attentive but not overbearing. You feel as if you could ask for anything.\n\nThe menu is quite extensive with specials also. The food itself was delicious with very generous portions and a quite varied wine list.\n\nThis truly is a hidden gem and if you are in Durham and looking for a real Italian feel, with a small, intimate atmosphere with great service, then look no further.\n\nI only wish we lived closer!

The Avenue
Avenue St, High Shincliffe, DurhamFantastic all rounder!
We were visiting friends and they were insistent we go here for my birthday dinner. Their little boy told us all about his best friend that worked there so we couldn't not.
The bar lady, his best friend, was definitely very lovely, the service was fast and friendly and the food was perfect.
What I loved was that it's hard going out with children - finding somewhere that does food they like, keeps them entertained, but mainly I worry about putting other dinners out I worry they may be having a kid free night and don't want them to be stuck next to noisy kids - this pub is very well layed out that there are different areas for each reason you're there. So I felt comfortable having my children, knowing there was another section people without kids could go sit.

39 Silver St, DurhamThe food was very good. We asked for water, but the waiter forgot (probably). We asked again and it took him ages to bring us water, but eventually we got it. Also, when we asked to split the bill, the waiter rushed off and then came back and split the bill on half, which is not what we wanted, we wanted that each pays what they had, we didn’t mind much, but it’s a bit weird not to ask, and to make the girl pay more than what she had.

Bells
Durham Market Place, 11, 11 Market Place, DurhamThis restaurant legit changed my mind towards fish and chips- used to find this dish just okay until I've tried the haddock here. I appreciate the half salad option as imo it makes the dish less heavy. The salad is also very fresh and they seemed to use seasonal ingredients - loved the strawberries and pomegranate seeds.
Haddock actually tasted flavourful (I usually find the fish in fish and chip dishes lacking flavour but not this one!), and the batter was not too thick or oily which I liked. The chips were amazing as well, probably cooked in beef dripping (?) and I like how they're not too undercooked and are crispy (again, I find many fish and chips dishes' chips a bit undercooked and mushy for my liking, but not this one).
All in all I'm really impressed especially considering that Durham isn't located next to the sea. After this meal I kept craving for more fish and chips, which I never would've believed I would before trying them here. Would absolutely recommend this place.

Pizza Nova - Wheatley Hill
Peter Lee Cottages, Wheatley Hill, DurhamPizza Nova has quickly become my go-to local takeaway when I’m craving quality pizza. From the moment you walk in, the place is clean, well-organised, and the staff are always polite and efficient. Even when they’re busy, they handle orders quickly and with a professional attitude, which is refreshing to see in a fast-paced takeaway environment.
What really sets them apart, though, is the food. The pizzas are consistently excellent — fresh ingredients, generous toppings, and perfectly cooked bases. I usually order the Meat Feast or Pepperoni Deluxe, and both are always packed with flavour and arrive hot and fresh. The crust has that perfect balance of crispy and chewy, and the cheese melts just right every time.
Their garlic bread and potato wedges are also worth a mention — crispy, well-seasoned, and a great side option. Plus, their portion sizes are generous, so you definitely get value for your money.
I also appreciate how easy it is to order — over the phone or in person, the service is smooth, and I’ve never had a wrong order. If you’re looking for a reliable, high-quality pizza takeaway that doesn’t cut corners, Pizza Nova is the one to try. Highly recommended!

Inshanghai
Unit 30B The Riverwalk, Lambton St, DurhamWe have been visiting In Shanghai for many years, last week was our first visit since the change of management. The staff were pleasant, friendly and attentive and looked very smart in their new uniforms. There was a wider choice of dishes on offer including some not previously seen though some old favourites like beef and leek and black bean sauce were absent. \nThe following is intended to be constructive criticism. There was no cutlery on the table, we only found out it was near the plates after asking and the only place we found serviettes was near the soup. The plates were cold. While all dishes were well prepared some were not very hot, cold plates didn't help. A tray of foo Yong looked tired and dry when we arrived and was still there when we left 45 minutes later. The sweet corn soup was very good but I like to add a little pepper and couldn't find any.\nI hope these comments are helpful, the minor points are easily rectified and will make a pleasant dining experience even better. \nDavid

The Blue House
Salter's Ln., Haswell, DurhamNot been in a while until recently and have been twice. The service was great. The main courses have been beautiful. I have to say that the deserts on both recent occasions let them down. I got an Eaton mess, it came in a jam jar and was just a jar of squirty cream with about 4 raspberries and about 4 pieces of meringue. You would have thought a child had made it. When I put my spoon in it, it deflated. Not good. My next experience was the trifle, I thought they couldn't get that wrong but the bowl had a very small amount of jelly with sponge in it. Could not taste any sherry. That was topped with runny custard from a carton then that was topped with squirty cream. I did not get the hearty trifle I expected. I would like to think the hot deserts would be better. This post is meant to be constructive and not to disrespect the restaurant. I will go back.

Chapter Two Cafe
Forth House, Mandale Business Park, DurhamMe and my wife were out test-driving cars when we thought to stop off for some brunch at Chapter Two Cafe. The café – which occupies a deceptively unassuming building at the edge of Mandale Business Park in Durham – is roomy on the inside, and the available seating space is well laid out. The interiors are modern, clean and well maintained.
The menu items are fairly priced, dare I say a bargain, and the menu as a whole is large but well-organised. In other words, there is a vast range of options, yet it is easy to find what you want.
I opted for the ‘create your own breakfast sandwich’ (and I love a café that offers this) with black pudding, sausage and a fried egg, and my wife chose the Chapter 2 Special, which is a generously sized full English breakfast that comes with a tea or coffee. Brown sauce and red sauce (or ketchup, as you may know it) are provided on the table. Service is friendly, and the food is delivered quickly.
Now for the most important part: the food was delicious. The bread bun, sausage and egg in my sandwich were flawless, and the Chapter 2 Special saw my wife clear the plate (with a little help from yours truly). My only criticism – and it is a minor one – is that my black pudding was slightly underdone.
In summary, I can see why so many people from the business park were dropping in as we ate, because this café is a gem. As such, if you work nearby and have (somehow) never been here, or if you’re feeling peckish after doing your shopping in nearby Dragonville, then I would thoroughly recommend swinging by here.

Newton Hall, Newton Hall Estate, 18a Alnwick Rd, DurhamEmma from The Kitchen catered our large family celebration meal when we were staying nearby at The Castle at Eden. She couldn’t have been more helpful, catering for a 3 course meal for 25 people mix of vegetarian, meat eaters and gluten free. Everyone loved their food and the huge chocolate fudge birthday cake was one of the best cakes I have ever had! They even brought all their own plates and cutlery so we didn’t have to wash up. Would highly recommend!

My son and I sat next to the window and was really captivated by the decor and atmosphere of the cafe. It was quite busy so service was a tad bit slow as it was table service but we eventually ordered and got our food and drinks and they were delicious! Really yummy. I believe the owner of the cafe was there too and he was checking to make sure that all his customers were happy and any issues were dealt with promptly. Lovely man and everyone in the cafe were super nice towards me and my son whilst we were there. Overall, a very good experience.
