Fish & Chips At 149
36 Galgate, Barnard CastleI brought my 2 grandsons for a meal. I am Coeliac and my eldest grandson is gluten intolerant. Not only was the GF meal here absolutely delicious but it was such a delight to find a place locally where our dietary needs were absolutely no problem whatsoever. The GF frier is completely separate, the staff are really aware and unlike so many places not only did I feel completely safe but for once (rarely) I also felt completely comfortable.
The gluten free batter was deliciously crisp, the fish moist and the chips (with GF vinegar - I know - this place is off the chart!) were lush. This was the first of what I’m sure will be many visits. Oh - and did I say - it’s not just some times or some days - this place caters (superbly) for those who need or want GF - all the time - at NO EXTRA COST. Seriously if I could give it 10 stars I would. Thank you 149 for the best fish and chips I’ve had in literally years.
Dietary restrictions: GF no problem whatsoever - eat here safely and comfortably whenever they are open - a rare find!

14 Horse Market, Barnard CastleThis is a great permanent 'pop up bar' that is a quirky little hidden gem. The bar is in a small shack type building with some tables and chairs. Outside under cover are several booths along with 2 patio area that are a sun trap, assuming it is sunny in Barnard Castle!!
Access is via a alleyway signposted off the main street with music guiding you in to the bar, great music was played when there
Prices are very reasonable and I highly recommend that you visit this place and experience the great atmosphere.
I understand there are occasionally food vendors that serve snacks but there is no fixed food offering.

82A Galgate, Barnard CastleWe have been repeat visitors to this excellent café, the food and choice of cakes is fantastic staff are fantastic too, and very friendly and sometimes even bring out little treats for our Border Collie pippin. We will visit again very soon.
Parking: Occasionally there are spaces outside, but if not just past the café heading north there are one or two streets on the left and right and you can easily park in one of these

Chap gave us a bit of history of the place and his times as a DJ (which explained the great ambient music). Fabulous products on sale easily compare to that of renowned chocolatiers I've had elsewhere. First thing we checked when we got home was to see if they delivered! Good to see a business thriving on today's high street.

Romaldkirk, Barnard CastleFab little pub! It’s very eccentric inside which might put some people off, but did a cracking pint of real ale, and fabulous chat from the landlord. We were welcomed by 3 very well behaved dogs and were the only customers on a Sunday late afternoon so spent all our time chatting with the landlord who is a real gent and interested in his customers. Nice and cheap too!

34 Galgate, Barnard CastleTried here this evening with my work colleague ordered chicken chowmein, a bag of chips and some vegetables spring rolls.. chowmein I asked for with some oyster sauce very fair sized portion was impressed, the chips was a very large bag from what I'm used to getting back home, and the spring rolls I got 12 of those.. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal the chowmein was outstanding, chips really nice aswell & as for the spring rolls they tasted outstanding aswell cost for the meal £13 quid pretty reasonable priced to be honest and a quick service aswell, so thanks! What a delightful find. A wonderful cappuccino and the best huge cheese scone we have ever tasted. Absolutely delicious!
A lovely farm shop, great eco building with very friendly and helpful staff.

8 The Bank, Barnard CastleWe visited for the first time and had a delicious Sunday lunch. I enjoyed my meal so much that I decided to get some pastries, for later. At the counter, the lady sounded proud of her cakes. I asked for a cinnamon roll and a slice of frangipane. Then something odd happened. She put my cinnamon roll straight into a microwave oven and started to reheat it for 30 seconds. I asked her to stop. She did, but she was strangely reluctant, and said 'it's from yesterday and a bit..' Okay, so the roll is stale, I thought, and I wished if I hadn't chosen a stale cinnamon roll among other nice looking products. But too late, I was already committed to pay for it and I did not have the courage to confront her. As she handed over the roll, she advised me to reheat it in the oven for 5 minutes. Once home, I was so eager to find out how stale it was, and cut a small piece. Indeed, it was dry, hard, and unpleasant, as the lady implied.

At 7.45pm the manager arrived with the bill which hadn’t been asked for saying no hurry though, then in a hearing distance to our table a discussion of needing our table now at 8pm! No time slot was given on booking. A shame as it ruined a Birthday celebration! Need to be precise if there is a time slot for tables!!
