I booked 15 guests into the lunch time slot a few months ago with Sarah, as the organiser I want to congratulate the whole team. It was flawless. The special offer of two courses for £20 was very good value. Everyone who had meat commented how tender and tasty this was. My nut roast was very nice with a lovely flavour. Our waitress Angel was organised and extremely helpful to everyone. Well done.

King Street Bakery

2 King St, Tavistock

By far the best bakery in Tavistock but it's a secret that only true local Tavy people know about. Pasties are off the scale and nearly make up for the fact that technically they're meat parcels as not from Cornwall.Best meal deal in the world that includes a large pasty, Burts crisps and a can of fizzy pop for a £5.

Hotel Endsleigh Hotel Endsleigh, Milton Abbot, Tavistock
Hotel Endsleigh

Hotel Endsleigh

Hotel Endsleigh, Milton Abbot, Tavistock

What an enigma wrapped up in a conundrum the Endsleigh is. The location is delightful and very restful, and the gardens, dell and waterfall make for a lovely stroll next to the river; a perfect way to work up a thirst for drinks back at the house in front of one of the roaring log fires. The house is overwhelmingly dark wood panelled, and a few parts of the public areas are, perhaps, a little tired, though some may mischievously suggest the trend of shabby chic is at play? Staff on front desk are welcoming and helpful with a guide to our room also offering to help with bags. Rooms was nice - very large and comfy bed, garden view and fresh fruit/nuts provided but no tea or coffee making (it can be ordered from the front desk), which given the room prices, felt a little off. Bathroom had only a roll-top bath with hand-held shower head, which was a little disappointing. Ordering drinks in afternoon the library (there is no formal bar), was a little frustrating as it took so long for anyone to take an order. Good selection of spirits and wines, and premium priced as one would expect. Dinner is a three-course offering, at £70pp, plus service, with four selections for each course. Treacle cured salmon was good, escabeche of red mullet was very delicate and full of flavour; Dukka crusted duck main was superb - beautifully cooked (pink) and accompanied with artichoke, carrots and other veg; some very nice cooking here. The cheese plate was a delight with Godminster cheddar and Sharpham brie being the stand outs. Wine list is as you would expect - loaded with encouragement to 'trade up' and venture to new areas, but their nominal 'house red', a South African at £32, was very drinkable and suited us perfectly. Staff in the restaurant were very friendly an attentive. One niggle was being charged for a cup of tea at the end of the meal - having spent £172 (plus 12.5% service) on dinner, it felt churlish to then charge for a single pot of tea, but maybe others will disagree. The restaurant itself is modestly formal - white tablecloth and dark wood panels suggest it perhaps best suits a certain clientele who prefer their fine dining with one eye on days long gone. More modern tastes might prefer a little more fun and and less 'starched' approach but whatever your preference there is no denying the food is very accomplished. I enjoyed the Endsleigh, but it didn't excite me the way some other places do (The Pig Hotel group for instance, which of course might not be to others tastes, but I rather like their offering of not taking itself too seriously), and accordingly The Endsleigh felt a little over priced by comparison. Others, of course, may disagree!
