L'Enclume
Cavendish St, Cartmel, Grange-over-SandsWe took a day trip from Manchester by train to grange-over-sands and then taxi to Cartmel.
A fifteen course flawless experience.
Location was steeped in history and a lovely garden and stream.
Service was perfect from the welcome to the farewell. We loved that we saw the full complement of staff deliver a dish or two. Service relaxed and friendly.
We had 3 glasses of wine between us to accompany the food. It was enough for us at lunch and the wines were great and the sommelier delightful.
Food was sublime. Each dish looked amazing and tasted as good as it looked.
The blacksmith theme and anvil motif tied everything together in a wonderfully well considered manner. Crockery also lovely to look at and lovely to the touch.
About A$1300 for two of us which we thought was good value for money for a very special experience. We hope to make a repeat visit.
TIP
If you do the the day return by train from Manchester as we did. Beware and be aware that at grange-over-sands railway station the phone signal is awful. This makes it very difficult to contact taxis on arrival. If we had our time again we would book a taxi to meet us at the station as soon as we knew the arrival time of the train. The restaurant will send you a list of the taxi firms they use.

Yew Tree Barn, WRS Architectural Antiques, Gallery, Harry's Cafe Bar
Yew Tree Barn Low Newton Nr Cartmel, Grange-over-SandsLovely find courtesy of Google maps. We needed somewhere to haul in and have some breakfast en route home to Yorkshire. Coffee and a bacon butty did the trick; Perfect well filled tasty bacon in top quality bread bun. Superb cappuccino to wash down. Eclectic place, super staff and top nosh food. A tad expensive (made my Yorkshire heart palpate a bit) this is not a moan it’s fact but you pay a little bit more for quality. Definitely return for their full breakfast one day.

Amber Court
Main St, Grange-over-SandsThe restaurant shares its entrance with the sports bar next door, and lacks a little signage but once you find your way inside, the service is friendly, and very quick, and the food is tasty. There is a wide range on the menu, with all the usual traditional dishes, reasonably priced. The restaurant atmosphere was a little flat - felt like a Chinese restaurant from maybe the 1980s, with about 6 tracks of background music continually on a loop. There were very few other seated diners when we were there which also reduced the atmosphere. There were some people collecting take-away orders and they continually came into the seated eating area, which somehow also reduced the atmosphere of calm dining. However, that apart, the whole experience was good and the food enjoyable.

The Kings Arms
The Square, Cartmel, Grange-over-SandsMy daughter and I visited whilst on holiday at Flookburgh, on a Wednesday when they had just changed the menu ordering the Fish and chips (daughter) and Cumberland Sausage. The food came quickly and was piping hot and delicious. My daughter said it was the best fish and chips she'd had in a long time. The staff were pleasant and efficient and we'll definitely visit again when back in the area.

Masons Arms, Strawberry Bank
Strawberry Bank, Grange-over-SandsWe recently stayed here for a 50th wedding anniversary celebration. It couldn't have been more perfect, from the location with its breathtaking views, friendly staff, warm atmosphere, great food and drinks and especially the fact they make dogs so welcome too. The rooms were beautiful, clean and just a joy to be in.
The waitress blew my mind by remembering all of our meal orders (8 in total) for dinner without writing it down! The food was absolutely delicious, cooked to perfection.
In the morning we had breakfast which was gorgeous. A selection of cereals, croissants, juices and then a cooked breakfast. We had 2 dogs with us and they were given the option to have a sausage for breakfast, which was cut up and in a bowl each.
All in all a perfect get away. We would all highly recommend visiting, especially for a nights stay.
Thank you team, we will be back!

Aulis Cartmel
Cavendish St, Cartmel, Grange-over-SandsThis was my first time visiting at a 3-star Michelin restaurant as well as eating at the Chef's table.
Firstly, from now on I will definitely attempt to do the Chef's table experience at a restaurant when it is available. It is a much more entertaining affair, and more interesting and informative experience than your traditional restaurant experience. Whilst preparing each of the individual and unique courses, the chef clearly explained the inspiration/ingredients behind each course. He also shared how L'enclume are trying to be more sustainable and how Simon Rogan has his own farm nearby in Cartamel to source fresh local produce for the restaurant.
The chefs table experience also allows you to speak to other groups of people present and share their experience and why they are there and their opinions. It's a great experience for foodies and highly recommended.
For l'enclume and Aulis Cartamel , the food is great, organic, beautifully presented and expertly prepared. My personal favourite is the Orkney Scallops and Corra lim pudding caramelised in Birch sap. This restaurant is a true English restaurant, that is worth 3 stars.
Parking: Hard to find parking in Cartamel
